Terex Diesel builds diesel generators in Türkiye (Turkey), Georgia’s neighbour. Our 2,000 m² facility in Tuzla, Istanbul, produces 10–4,125 kVA sets, each full-load tested before shipment.
Some of Georgia’s ski resorts are above 2,000 metres. When we choose a generator for a hotel or a cable car there, we think about two things together: thin air and a winter morning. On the coast, in Batumi, the picture is reversed: winters are mild, the air humid and salty.
Altitude
The higher you go, the less air the engine takes in, and it loses power. At 2,000 metres this loss can no longer be ignored. We select the set for the site altitude and move up one rating if needed. We explain how the calculation is done in power loss with temperature and altitude.
A winter morning
A backup generator’s job is to start the moment the mains fails. For that to happen during an outage in a snowstorm:
- A block (coolant) heater keeps the engine warm.
- The antifreeze ratio is set for the lowest temperature on site.
- The battery is kept charged; battery capacity drops in the cold.
- Fuel suited to cold weather is used.
The canopy protects the set from snow and icing. The air inlet and outlet openings need to be placed so that snow build-up does not affect them.
The Black Sea coast
On the coast, humidity and salt come first. Corrosion-resistant surface protection and regular maintenance are recommended. On sets that stand idle for long periods, regular test runs help against condensation in the alternator and panel.
Fuel in winter
The road to a mountain hotel can be closed by snow for several days. That is why we choose the tank capacity not only by consumption but also by how long the road may stay closed. A base frame tank may be enough for short outages; for longer periods an external tank is added. To stop the fuel from thickening in the cold, winter-grade fuel should be used, and the tank and fuel lines protected from frost. For the calculation, see our fuel tank sizing article.
Applications
In Georgia, generators are used in hotels and ski resorts, hospitals and public buildings, on construction and infrastructure projects, in industrial plants, at telecom stations and on farms. In buildings that cannot tolerate an outage, the ATS panel brings the set online automatically. In large facilities, two or more sets run in parallel with a synchronization panel. For construction sites we also ship trailer-mounted generators and light towers.
Grid and shipping
The grid is 50 Hz, 220/380 V. The frequency is the same as in our catalogue; we set the alternator to a 220/380 V output.
Georgia shares a land border with Türkiye. The sets usually go by road; depending on the project, sea transport can also be used. Each one passes a full-load test before it leaves the factory. A commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin are provided; the shipping method, Incoterms and any further documents are agreed in writing at the quotation stage.

Frequently asked questions
What voltage and frequency should a generator in Georgia have?
The Georgian grid is 50 Hz, 220/380 V. The frequency is the same as the 50 Hz / 1,500 rpm ratings in our catalogue; we ship the alternator set to a 220/380 V output.
What does a generator need to start first time in the cold?
A block (coolant) heater keeps the engine warm. The antifreeze ratio is set for the lowest temperature on site, the battery is kept charged, and fuel suited to cold weather is used. Regular test runs also bring problems to light before an outage does.
How is the generator rating decided for a hotel in the mountains?
First the loads are added up, and the start of the largest motor (for example a cable car or a pump) is taken into account. Then the power loss for the site altitude is added. At around 2,000 metres this difference is significant; sometimes you need to move up one rating.
