In Nicosia the temperature often goes above 40 °C in July and August. On the coast, humidity and salt are added to the heat. Most generator requests on the island also come for buildings that will see their highest load in exactly these months: hotels, residential complexes, hospitals, campuses.
The summer load decides
In Northern Cyprus a building’s electrical load changes a lot between winter and summer. When we size the set, we look at the busiest summer evening, with the air conditioners, kitchen, lifts, pool and water pumps all running together. We also add the start of the largest motor. In facilities where the load changes this much with the season, we recommend running two sets in parallel with a synchronization panel instead of one large set. In winter one set is enough, in summer both run together; and during maintenance the building is not left in the dark.
In hot weather the engine loses power and the radiator works harder. We choose the radiator for the highest temperature on site. The details are in power loss with temperature and altitude.
Salt
On a set a few hundred metres from the sea, salt air acts slowly but constantly on metal surfaces and the canopy. Corrosion-resistant surface protection, a good position and regular maintenance extend its life.
Noise
In hotels and residential complexes, the generator noise must not disturb the surroundings; that is why a soundproof canopy is used in almost every project. The ATS panel starts the set automatically when the mains fails, transfers the load, and returns the load to the mains when it comes back.
Pre-season test
A backup generator can stand for months without running. Problems usually show up at the worst moment, in August: a flat battery, stale fuel, a dried-out seal. Before the season starts, we recommend running the set under real load or with a load bank, and checking the battery and fuel. Other applications
