Dual Generator Sets
Dual set generator: two diesel generators operating in synchronization on one base frame. Failure, load and time redundancy; e.g. 2 × 1,000 kVA.

A dual set consists of two diesel generator sets operating in synchronization on a single base frame. When our customer requires 2,000 kVA, instead of a single 2,000 kVA set we produce 2 × 1,000 kVA synchronized on the same base frame. The two sets operate together as a single large generator, without carrying the risks of a single large generator.
Three types of redundancy
- Failure redundancy: If one of the sets fails, the other continues to operate. Power is not lost completely; critical loads continue to be supplied.
- Load redundancy: The two sets share the load. When the load decreases, one set runs; the second set is taken offline and is brought back online when needed.
- Time redundancy: The sets share operating hours in turn. This balances the service life and maintenance intervals of both sets; while one is under maintenance, the other continues in service.
How it works
The sets are connected to each other through a synchronization panel. The panel matches the voltage, frequency and phase angle of the two sets, connects them to a common busbar and distributes the load between the sets. When the load increases, the second set is brought online automatically; when the load decreases, it is taken offline. In the event of a mains failure, the system operates together with the automatic transfer switch (ATS) panel.
| Single set (2,000 kVA) | Dual set (2 × 1,000 kVA) | |
|---|---|---|
| If one set fails | Power is lost | The other set continues to operate |
| During maintenance | Power is lost | One set is maintained while the other runs |
| At low load | The large set runs at low load | One set runs at a suitable load |
| Operating hours | Accumulate on a single engine | Distributed between the two sets |
Applications
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Data centres and telecommunications infrastructure
- Industrial facilities with continuous production
- Hotels, shopping centres and commercial buildings whose load varies at different times of the day
- Sites with no grid or a weak grid
Manufacturing
Dual sets are configured as canopy, open or container type according to the project. The engine and alternator selection, the power of the sets, the panel configuration and the fuel system are determined according to the project load. Every generator is tested at full load before shipment.

Frequently asked questions
What is a dual set generator?
A dual set consists of two diesel generator sets mounted on a single base frame and operating in synchronization. For example, for a facility requiring 2,000 kVA, 2 × 1,000 kVA is produced on one base frame instead of a single 2,000 kVA set. The two sets supply the load together and back each other up when necessary.
What is the difference between a dual set and a single large generator?
With a single large set, a failure or maintenance means a complete loss of power. With a dual set, while one set is out of service the other continues to operate. In addition, when the load is low only one set runs; this reduces fuel consumption and the problems caused by low-load operation.
Which projects is a dual set suitable for?
It is suitable for hospitals, data centres, industrial facilities and businesses whose load varies at different times of the day, where continuity of power is critical. The appropriate power and configuration are determined together according to the project load.
