Canopied Generator Sets
Soundproof canopied diesel generator sets: canopy models from the smallest set up to 1,100 kVA, canopy design, applications and a model table by power.

A canopied generator is a generator set in which the diesel engine, alternator, control panel and fuel tank are supplied as one unit inside a soundproof steel canopy. It is also known as a “silent generator”. The canopy protects the set against the weather and unauthorised access, reduces operating noise and allows the set to be installed outdoors without a separate generator room.
Terex Diesel has been in the generator industry since 2006. We build our canopied sets ourselves at our production facility in Türkiye, from canopy fabrication to assembly and full-load testing. On this page you will find how a canopied set is built, at which ratings a canopy is used, how canopied, open and containerised sets differ, and our canopied models by power.
What is a canopied generator set?
A canopied set is an open generator set combined with a canopy designed in the factory. The canopy is not a cover added afterwards; it is sized for the cooling, exhaust, fuel and maintenance needs of the set. A canopied set consists of the following main parts:
- Diesel engine and alternator: Mounted on a common base frame with anti-vibration mounts.
- Control panel: As standard, sets below 500 kVA use the Datakom DKG-309 controller and sets of 500 kVA and above use the Datakom D-500 controller.
- Base-frame fuel tank: The set runs from its own tank without an additional tank. The tank capacity depends on the model.
- Soundproof canopy: The sheets are CNC laser-cut and bent and finished with electrostatic powder coating. The inner surfaces are lined with sound-absorbing material.
- Exhaust silencer: Inside or on top of the canopy, with an outlet that directs the exhaust gas in a safe direction.
What the canopy provides
Sound insulation. The sound-absorbing lining, the baffled air inlets and outlets and the exhaust silencer work together. For our canopied series the sound level is given as ±75 dB(A) @7 m. This is a series-level figure; we do not publish sound values per model. The noise heard on site depends on the position of the set, the surrounding walls and buildings, and the distance. If your project has a noise limit, simply state it with the measuring distance when you request a quotation.
Weather protection. The canopy is the first layer of protection against rain, snow, dust and impact. The powder-coated surface resists corrosion. Lockable doors keep unauthorised people away from the panel and the engine.
Correct cooling. The inlet and outlet louvres for radiator cooling air and combustion air are sized so that the engine does not overheat at full load. For this reason the canopy is designed separately for each power range according to the size of the set.
Easy maintenance. Wide doors give convenient access for oil, filter, battery and coolant checks. The fuel filler is outside the canopy, so the canopy does not need to be opened for refuelling.
Transport and positioning. Canopied sets are shipped as a single unit and positioned on site with a forklift or crane. For applications that change location frequently, the same canopied set can be mounted on a trailer; see trailer-mounted generator sets.
At which ratings is a canopy used?
Our canopy models cover all ratings from the smallest set up to 1,100 kVA. Sets above 1,100 kVA are supplied in a container instead of a canopy; see containerised generators. At these ratings a container is better suited to the weight of the set, its cooling air demand and transport to site.
Engine options for canopied models come from Perkins, Baudouin, Cummins, FPT Iveco, Kofo, Kubota, Quartz, Scania, SDEC, Volvo Penta, Yangdong and Yuchai. The model table below shows which engines are available at each rating. Each row links to the relevant power page, where all models in that range are listed with their technical data.
Where are canopied generators used?
- Buildings and residential complexes: Standby power for residential complexes, office buildings and hotels. The set is placed outdoors, for example in a car park or a garden.
- Hospitals and public buildings: Standby power that starts automatically during a mains failure; an ATS panel is supplied with the set on request. See ATS transfer switch panels.
- Industrial plants and workshops: Standby or prime power so that production does not stop during an outage.
- Construction sites: The main power source on sites where there is no mains supply yet.
- Agriculture and irrigation: For pump stations far from the grid.
- Telecoms: Low-power canopied sets for base stations and remote site equipment.
In residential areas where a noise limit matters, the position of the canopy also affects the result. We explain what to look for in our article on choosing a silent (canopied) generator.
Canopied, open and containerised sets compared
| Canopied set | Open set | Containerised set | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation | Outdoors; no separate room needed | Generator room, shelter or project-specific enclosure | Outdoors; high-power installations |
| Power range (Terex) | From the smallest set up to 1,100 kVA | 10–2,750 kVA | Above 1,100 kVA |
| Sound insulation | By the canopy; series figure ±75 dB(A) @7 m | None; depends on the room insulation | By the container insulation |
| Weather protection | Canopy protects | Building or enclosure protects | Container protects |
| Fuel tank | In the base frame | In the base frame or external tank | Depends on the project |
| Installation work | Base, cabling and exhaust direction | Room ventilation, exhaust line, fuel line | Base, cabling, crane positioning |
| Transport | Forklift or crane; can be trailer-mounted | Forklift or crane | Crane and truck |
| Maintenance access | Through the canopy doors | Open from all sides | From inside the container |
In short: if there is no separate room for the set and up to 1,100 kVA is needed, a canopied set is the most practical solution. If a generator room already exists, an open generator set may be more economical. At very high ratings a containerised set is used.
Production and quality
Our canopied sets are built in our 2,000 m² production area in Türkiye. Cutting, bending, painting and insulation of the canopy sheets, assembly of the set and the electrical connections are all carried out in the same facility. Every set is tested at full load before delivery. Our production complies with ISO 9001, CE and TSE-HYB. For export shipments we provide the certificate of origin.
Where the project requires it, the canopy colour, dimensions and internal layout can be changed. For canopy fabrication and canopies for existing open sets, see the generator canopies page.
If you are not sure which rating you need, use the power calculator or fill in the form at the top of this page. Our team will send you the canopied model and quotation that suit your needs.

Frequently asked questions
What is a canopied generator?
A canopied generator is a set in which the diesel engine, alternator, control panel and fuel tank are supplied as one unit inside a soundproof, lockable steel canopy. The canopy protects the set against rain, dust and unauthorised access, reduces operating noise and allows the set to be installed outdoors without a separate generator room.
How many dB is a silent generator?
For our canopied series the sound level is given as ±75 dB(A) @7 m. This is a series-level figure; we do not publish separate sound values per model. If your project has a specific noise limit, state it with the measuring distance in your enquiry and the canopy will be selected accordingly.
Can a canopied generator be used outdoors?
Yes. Canopied sets are designed for outdoor use. The canopy protects against rain, dust and impact, and the air louvres, exhaust outlet and external fuel filler are positioned for safe use on site. The set should stand on a level, load-bearing base and the exhaust should point away from areas where people are present.
At what power is a canopy used, and when a container?
Our canopy models cover all ratings from the smallest set up to 1,100 kVA. Sets above 1,100 kVA are supplied in a container. At lower ratings a container or an open set can also be chosen if the project requires it.
Does a canopied generator have a fuel tank?
Yes. In canopied sets the fuel tank is built into the base frame. The tank capacity depends on the model and is listed on each model's technical page. If a longer running time is needed, the set can be designed together with an external fuel tank.
Can a canopied set be mounted on a trailer?
Yes. For applications that change location frequently, such as construction sites and rental fleets, the canopied set can be supplied on a road trailer. See our trailer-mounted generator sets page for details.
