In Ukraine a standby generator often has to start in the coldest hours of the night, when the grid fails under peak load. At −25 °C a set that starts easily in October can fail on its first automatic start. This guide lists what a set needs for winter and a checklist to complete before the first frost. The general principles are in our article on running a generator in winter.

What Ukrainian specifications ask for

Tenders for hospitals, water utilities and municipal sites typically state:

  • an operating range of −25 to +40 °C with automatic engine pre-heating;
  • a canopy with internal exhaust;
  • a fuel tank for at least 10 hours at 75% load;
  • 400 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz, an ATS-ready controller with RS485;
  • documentation in Ukrainian and English.

Equipment for −25 °C

Item Purpose
Block heater (jacket water heater) with thermostat Keeps the engine warm so it starts first time and accepts load quickly
Battery sized for cold cranking, automatic charger The battery delivers less current in the cold while the engine needs more
Antifreeze mixed for the lowest site temperature Prevents freezing of the cooling system
Winter diesel fuel Prevents wax gelling in filters and lines
Oil of the right viscosity Keeps the oil fluid at start
Canopy with closed louvres and internal exhaust Limits cold air and snow ingress
Controller display heater where needed Some controller displays are rated only to −20 °C

Fuel and oil

Fuel bought in summer can stay in the tank until the first frost. Before winter, replace it or blend it with winter grade fuel, drain water from the tank and separator and change the fuel filter. For oil, follow the engine maker’s viscosity table for the lowest expected temperature.

Pre-winter checklist

  1. Check that the block heater works and holds the coolant warm.
  2. Load-test the battery and check the charger.
  3. Measure the freezing point of the coolant.
  4. Replace fuel and oil filters; drain water from the fuel system.
  5. Check the canopy seals, louvres and the exhaust outlet for snow ingress.
  6. Run the set on load for at least 30 minutes and test the ATS transfer.
  7. Keep spare filters and a battery charger on site.

Frequently asked questions

What do Ukrainian tenders require for winter operation?

Specifications commonly state an operating range of −25 to +40 °C with automatic engine pre-heating, a canopy with internal exhaust and a fuel tank sized for at least 10 hours at 75% load. We fit a thermostat-controlled block heater and size the batteries for cold starting.

Which diesel fuel should be used in winter?

Use a winter or arctic grade whose cold-filter plugging point is below the lowest expected site temperature, and ask the fuel supplier to confirm it. Summer fuel left in the tank from autumn can gel in the filter at the first frost.

Which engine oil is suitable for −25 °C?

Choose the viscosity grade from the engine manufacturer's table for the lowest ambient temperature. A lower first viscosity number (for example 5W or 10W instead of 15W) keeps the oil fluid at a cold start. Change the oil before winter if it is near the end of its interval.
