Our diesel generators are grouped by power on separate pages. Choose the kVA rating in the selector above: the page lists the models of that power with their standby and prime ratings, engine and alternator.

What is kVA?

kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is the apparent power of the generator; it is the unit used in generator catalogues. The power consumed by your equipment is the active power, given in kW. With a power factor of 0.8: kW = kVA × 0.8, so 100 kVA ≈ 80 kW and 500 kVA ≈ 400 kW. If you know the power in kW, use the conversion table on diesel generators in kW.

Standby and prime power

Standby power is the maximum power available for a limited time during a mains failure. Prime power is available for unlimited hours under a variable load and is lower than the standby power. If the generator will run for long periods, choose by prime power. Details: standby, prime and continuous power.

Which kVA rating?

The required power is found from the total of the loads running at the same time and the starting current of motors. See our guide what size generator do I need and our generator power calculator.

kVA generator price

Two generators with the same kVA rating can differ in price depending on the engine, alternator, canopy and equipment. Enter the power and preferred engine in the form and we will send you a written quote. What determines the price: generator price factors.

Frequently asked questions

What does kVA mean for a generator?

kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is the apparent power of the generator; it is the unit used in generator catalogues. The power your equipment actually uses is the active power, in kW. With a power factor of 0.8: kW = kVA × 0.8.

How many kW is a 100 kVA generator?

With a power factor of 0.8, 100 kVA ≈ 80 kW. By the same calculation, 50 kVA ≈ 40 kW, 250 kVA ≈ 200 kW, 500 kVA ≈ 400 kW and 1,000 kVA ≈ 800 kW.

Which kVA rating should I choose?

The rating depends on the total of the loads running at the same time, the starting current of motors and whether the generator is used for standby or continuous duty. Send us your loads and we will size the generator with you.

What does the price of a kVA generator depend on?

The price depends on the power (kVA), the engine and alternator brand, the canopy, the control panel and transfer switch, the fuel tank and the delivery location. That is why we give it in a written quote prepared for your requirement.
